Everyone can dance!
If you have never heard of or seen a contra dance, it’s time to experience one in a fun, relaxed environment. So what in the heck is a contra dance? Contra dancing is a traditional folk dance where partners face each other in parallel lines or “contra to” each other and move up and down the line over the course of the dance. Most of us have tried square dancing at one time in our lives and contra dancing is very similar. You’ll recognize the steps – do-si-do, promenade, and swing your partner.
The Todd CommUnity Dances take place at the Todd Mercantile on the first “teenth” Friday of every month (check out the TCPO website for the schedule, toddnc.org/calendar). The dances are family friendly, beginner friendly and loads of fun. In addition to actual contra dances, there will be some square dances, waltzes and maybe even some flat footing. The live band and the caller will walk dancers through the steps before each dance so there is no need to be intimidated. The other dancers will also help newbies get up to speed.
You don’t need a partner or a special outfit. Wear something cool and comfortable. Smooth soled shoes make it easier to slide across the floor. The cost is $5.00 for the band. By the way, dancing is great exercise! Swing on down to the next dance this Friday, June 17, at 7:30 pm.
